Restaurant Yokiyo in Amsterdam

A few weeks ago Yokiyo opened its doors in the Red Light district in Amsterdam. It is the first modern Korean restaurant in the city centre, which we ofcourse had to try out! The Korean background of Domingo Atsma and Tim Doornewaard and the international experience of chef Jaymz Pool (Wilde Zwijnen en Trouw), has led to this brand new addition to Amsterdam.

After arrival the employees will welcome you friendly and you’ll be escorted to your table. On the ground floor you can take a seat at the large wooden tables, where you can order a la carte dishes, which are served by the large open kitchen. Upstairs on the first floor, you will find their concept of “Korean Social Food”. There are five tables where you can enjoy a fun and authentic Korean barbecue starting from four persons. Because of extra lighting here, you’ll discover the special interior immediately: modern, playful and unique. The large air ventilation systems, which are located right above the table and which reminds us of landing UFO’s, play a distinct role in their interior. In the back they also have an area where you can order the delicious meals of the chef’s special menu, while enjoying the view of the Oude Kerk.

KOREAN BARBECUE IN AMSTERDAM

We ofcourse wanted to try out the Korean Barbecue! Normally it’s starting from four persons, but since it was a little quiet that day, we could sit at a large table with the two of us. We ordered a starter, two main courses, which include rice, lettuce and three different banchan’s (Korean side dishes) and a dessert of miso pear and green tea icecream. The taste was really good, but in our opinion the portions were a little too small. But hey, they just started their business and they’re still in the start-up phase. Despite of these small flaws, we definitely think that Yokiyo deserves a spot on Places we Know!
